Dyslexia - A Gift?

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,

Taare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan’s directorial debut is about a boy who has dyslexia. Dyslexia often manifests itself as difficulty with a written language, particularly with reading and spelling. There are those that consider dyslexia a gift though, rather than the stigmatism or learning disability as it has become widely known as today. Consider the following quote from the Davis Dyslexia Association International (http://www.dyslexia.com/) :

“Dyslexic people are visual, multi-dimensional thinkers. We are intuitive and highly creative, and excel at hands-on learning. Because we think in pictures, it is sometimes hard for us to understand letters, numbers, symbols, and written words. We can learn to read, write and study efficiently when we use methods geared to our unique learning style.”

Besides directing and producing the film, Khan plays teacher Ram Shankar Nikumbh. Did you know that some of the famous Hollywood celebrities cope with dyslexia as Nikumbh’s young student Ishaan Awasthi (Darsheel Safary) in the film? Some of them weren’t even aware of it until they were adults and went through their childhood years, unaware. They are: Orlando Bloom, Tom Cruise, Patrick Dempsey, Harrison Ford, Whoopi Goldberg, Salma Hayek, Keira Knightly, Keanu Reeves and Gwen Stefani.
