Although the baadshah of Bollywood ushered in the 38th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa this week, there were no mainstream Hindi blockbuster films to be seen as part of the festivities. Last year’s festival had scores of cine-goers waiting for hours in some cases to see Rang De Basanti, Krrish and Lage Raho Munnabhai. So what went wrong this time?
It seems that there was a question as to what constitutes mainstream cinema in the eyes of the organizers. Does Bollywood fit into that category? Or was the problem the fact that many Bollywood producers refuse to equip their films with subtitles?
Either way, the festival didn’t showcases any blockbusters but rather chose Bhavna Talwar’s controversial film Dharm and Sameer Hanchate’s Gafla for the Indian Panorama segment, where these blockbusters would normally appear.
Wonder what SRK thought about that? After all, Om Shanti Om didn’t make the cut either.
